Tariq Rahman’s Return: Impact on India-Bangladesh Relations

by Archynetys Economy Desk

Digital Desk, New Delhi. A lawyer associated with the pro-Pakistan Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh has threatened to kill Tariq Rehman. The threat came just hours after the Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader returned to the country after 17 years. India was also mentioned in this threat.

Jamaat-e-Islami-affiliated lawyer Shahryar Kabir alleged that Tariq Rehman was ‘betraying his father’ by returning to Bangladesh and ‘accepting India’s conditions’. These comments are being seen as a direct provocative action against India. The incident occurred just a day after former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia‘s son Rehman arrived in Dhaka.

Tariq Rahman’s vision for Bangladesh

Tariq Rehman said in his first speech, ‘Just as there are people from the mountains in this country, there are people from the plains too. Muslims, Buddhists, Christians, Hindus and people of different religions live in this country.

Together we want to create a Bangladesh that we have dreamed of, that a mother dreams of. That is, we want to create a safe Bangladesh.

Why the rebellion in NCP?

Within the NCP, while some people want an alliance with the Jamaat, some people are also against it. As seat-sharing talks progress, a well-known NCP leader, Mir Arshadul Haq, has resigned from the party.

The February 12 elections in Bangladesh will be fought between the two factions, with the Awami League out of the fray due to the ban imposed by the interim government. The Jamaat wants to postpone the scheduled elections.

As Jamaat and NCP are finalizing the alliance, the main contest in this election is likely to be between Jamaat and BNP. This is the reason why Jamaat has now started targeting Tariq Rehman, because he is insisting on holding elections as soon as possible.

What will be the impact on relations with India?

In the form of Tariq Rahman, India will have to deal with a leader who puts Bangladesh first. But he is also a person who does not care about India-Bangladesh historical relations.

On the other hand, Jamaat is just anti-India and does not care about security, welfare, education, poverty alleviation and other issues that Tariq Rahman has talked about in his vision for Bangladesh.

A firm believer in Islamic principles and faith, Rahman sees Bangladesh as a country where there is space and safety for people of all religions, rather than leading the country down the path of religious fundamentalism.
