Frustration Erupts: Workers Demand Action on Port Congestion

Workers took to the streets in front of Post 9 at Tanjung Priok Port in North Jakarta on Sunday, April 20, 2025, to voice their frustration over crippling traffic jams caused by ongoing container unloading operations. The presentation highlights the severe impact of port inefficiencies on both transportation workers and local residents.

Police Presence and a Humanist Approach

Approximately 398 officers, including personnel from the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), Mobile Brigade Corps (Satbrimobda), Ditsamapta, and the Tanjung Priok Port Police, were deployed to oversee the demonstration organized by the Indonesian Port Transportation Workers Federation (FBTPI). Authorities emphasized a non-aggressive approach.

Security is carried out in a humanist manner, and officers give fruits, food, and drinks to participants of the demonstration as a form of concern for the National Police to the people who carry out demonstrations so as not to thirst and hunger.

AKBP Martuasah H Tobing, Tanjung Priok Port Police Chief, stated that all firearms were secured, and officers were instructed to prioritize a humanist and professional approach in managing the demonstration. This approach included providing refreshments to the protestors.

Traffic Disruption and Choice Routes

The demonstration prompted situational road closures around the Tanjung Priok Port area and the Cilincing highway. Authorities urged commuters to seek alternative routes to avoid the congestion. The traffic snarls, which have reportedly lasted up to 12 hours, stem from bottlenecks in the container loading and unloading processes within the port.

Root Cause: Port Inefficiency and its Ripple Effects

The recent traffic chaos, especially severe on Thursday, April 17, 2025, has had a cascading effect, impacting not only local arterial roads but also toll roads within the city. This incident underscores the critical need for improved port efficiency and infrastructure to mitigate disruptions to the broader transportation network.Similar congestion issues at other major ports, such as the Port of Los Angeles, have led to significant supply chain disruptions and economic losses, highlighting the global importance of efficient port operations.

The workers are demanding immediate action to address these inefficiencies and prevent future gridlock. The long-term solution likely involves a combination of infrastructure upgrades, streamlined logistics processes, and improved coordination between port authorities and transportation companies.
