Public Outcry After Eid Holiday Incident

A recent incident of alleged sexual harassment at Tanah Abang Station in Jakarta has ignited public fury and renewed calls for enhanced security measures in public transit spaces. The incident, which occurred on the third night of Eid al-Fitr (April 2, 2025), involved a woman who was reportedly targeted after disembarking from a train.

Details of the Alleged Assault

According to an account shared on Instagram by an online taxi driver, @indra_papsky, the victim reported being followed from the train platform to the lower concourse of Tanah Abang Station. The situation escalated when, while on an escalator, a man allegedly sprayed a suspicious liquid, believed to be semen, onto the back of her pants. The victim, understandably traumatized and in shock, later recounted the ordeal to the taxi driver who picked her up around 7:55 PM for a ride to Kemang, South Jakarta.

Victim’s Frustration with Reporting Process

Adding to the victim’s distress, she claimed that her initial attempt to report the incident was met with redirection. she was allegedly instructed to file her report at Juanda Station instead, highlighting potential gaps in the immediate response protocols for such incidents.

KAI Commuter’s Response and Investigation

KAI Commuter, the operator of the commuter rail line, has stated that they are actively investigating the alleged sexual harassment. Leza Arlan, Public Relations Manager for KAI Commuter, stated:

The report is immediately followed up through the analytic Supervisory Camera System (CCTV) to track the alleged perpetrators.

Following the report, officers were dispatched to the station, but the alleged perpetrator was no longer present, and the victim had already left. CCTV footage is being analyzed to identify the individual who appeared to be trailing the victim. The individual’s image has been incorporated into KAI Commuter’s facial recognition system, which will alert authorities if he is detected within the station premises again.

Enhanced Surveillance and Coordination

KAI Commuter has emphasized its commitment to increasing surveillance and collaborating with law enforcement to thoroughly investigate the incident. they are also urging social media users who may have additional facts to come forward. This incident underscores the pervasive nature of sexual harassment, which, according to a recent study by the Jakarta Gender Index, affects nearly 1 in 5 women in public spaces within the city. The incident serves as a stark reminder that such crimes can occur anywhere, including seemingly secure environments like train stations.

Call to action: Reporting and Prevention

KAI Commuter is urging passengers to report any instances of indecent behavior they witness or experience. Leza Arlan added:

We urge all train users not to hesitate to report if you see or experience indecent actions at the station. Don’t be afraid to shout or ask for help.

The incident highlights the importance of victim empowerment and swift action by authorities to apprehend perpetrators and prevent future occurrences. Increased vigilance, improved reporting mechanisms, and enhanced security measures are crucial to ensuring the safety and well-being of commuters in Jakarta’s public transportation system. The hope is that increased awareness and proactive measures will deter future incidents and create a safer environment for all.
