Debate Sparks Over Dutch State Pension (AOW) Eligibility

Should the AOW be income-dependent? Columnist questions whether wealthy pensioners need the state pension.

A debate is brewing in the Netherlands regarding the eligibility for the Algemene Ouderdomswet (AOW), the Dutch state pension.Former political reporter Wouke van Scherrenburg, in her column in De Gelderlander, argues that pensioners who are financially well-off, such as those “that drive around in luxury campers, have long paid off their house and received a large pension,” may not need the AOW.

Van Scherrenburg points out that the current AOW system, which provides benefits to over 3.6 million elderly people, is facing financial strain. “The premiums that we all pay for that are insufficient,” she writes, adding that the situation is “only getting worse” because “the number of elderly people is growing and the number of workers is decreasing. Already more than half of the 52 billion are paid from the general resources, so the state treasury.”

The columnist suggests that politicians are avoiding a crucial conversation about the future of the AOW. While some pensioners view the AOW as a “nice extra,” others with meager pensions struggle to make ends meet. Van scherrenburg believes “The AOW-Roer thus has to go,” implying a need for critically important reform.
