Taliban Seeks Control of Afghan Embassy in Delhi, Submits New Diplomatic Nominees

Kabul: The Taliban’s foreign ministry in Afghanistan has made a significant request to the Government of India, asking for the handover of control of the Afghan embassy in Delhi. This move comes after recent high-level diplomatic engagements between India and the Taliban. Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri met with Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi in Dubai, marking the first official contact between the two sides.

Taliban Resumes Discussions, New Diplomatic Nominees Submitted

The Taliban has renewed its discussions with the Indian government regarding control over the Afghan embassy in New Delhi. According to reports by Amu TV, the Taliban has submitted a new list of proposed diplomats to Indian authorities. Notably, the list includes Najib Shaheen, the son of Suhail Shaheen, who serves as the Taliban representative in Doha.

Closure of Afghan Ministry in Delhi

The Afghan Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Delhi has been in a state of closure since the end of November. During this period, Afghan diplomats faced difficulties in securing visa extensions and witnessed a lack of change in the Indian government’s stance towards their country.

India Considers Taliban’s Request

Following the meeting with the Indian Foreign Secretary, the Taliban has once again submitted its list of diplomatic nominees to New Delhi. Shinkai Karokhail, a former ambassador of Afghanistan to Canada, highlighted that India would take a cautious approach in examining the matter. Karokhail emphasized, “India cannot outright reject the Taliban’s request, but it will be highly selective in approving individuals for diplomatic roles.”

She further explained that given the Taliban’s close ties with Pakistan’s intelligence and military, New Delhi may avoid appointing individuals directly linked to Islamabad’s security establishment. This consideration underscores the complex political dynamics at play in the region.

Potential Reopening of Indian Embassy in Kabul

India may also reconsider reopening its embassy in Kabul. The embassy was closed following the Taliban’s takeover in August 2021. Apart from the Delhi embassy, Afghanistan maintains two consulates in India—one in Mumbai and the other in Hyderabad. Currently, the Mumbai consulate is overseen by Ikramuddin Kamil, who was appointed by the Taliban and holds a degree from the South Asian University in India.

India’s Strategic Considerations

India’s decision regarding the Taliban’s requests could have significant implications for regional geopolitics. The country has always been cautious about its approach to the Taliban, given the group’s previous ties with extremist organizations. Indian officials are likely to weigh the potential benefits of improved relations with the Taliban against the concerns related to security and stability in the region.

Enhancing diplomatic ties with the Taliban could provide India with new opportunities to engage Afghanistan economically and politically. Additionally, discussions around the use of Iran’s Chabahar port could open new avenues for trade and connectivity between the countries.

Conclusion

The Taliban’s recent requests to India highlight the evolving landscape of diplomatic relations in the region. As India considers the Taliban’s proposals, it is crucial for the government to balance its strategic interests with regional security concerns. The potential reopening of embassies and the selection of diplomats will determine the future trajectory of bilateral ties between India and Afghanistan under the Taliban administration.
