Storm Martinho’s Lingering Impact: Flooding and Travel Disruptions Across Spain

Published:

Weather warnings and Coastal Impacts

as storm Martinho begins to dissipate, its final day is expected to bring persistent rainfall, notably affecting the Cantabrian coast. The Spanish Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued an orange alert for coastal regions including Cantabria, Asturias, Galicia, and the Basque Country, indicating a continued risk of hazardous weather conditions. While the worst of the storm has passed, cloudy skies and strong showers are still anticipated in the Strait of Gibraltar, the Alboran Sea, and along the northern Mediterranean coast.

River Levels Rise, Causing Evacuations

The aftermath of Martinho has led to meaningful concerns regarding rising river levels, especially in the provinces of Toledo, Ávila, and Madrid. The Tagus River, for example, has surged to a flow rate of 1,000 cubic meters per second as it passes through Talavera de la Reina. This has resulted in critical situations for numerous reservoirs. According to recent reports, twenty-five reservoirs within the Tagus River basin, spanning Guadalajara, Madrid, Toledo, and Cáceres, have exceeded the red alert threshold, signaling a high risk of overflow. Conversely, nineteen other dams are significantly underfilled, highlighting the uneven distribution of rainfall.

The escalating river levels have forced evacuations in several communities. In Escalona, Toledo, approximately one hundred residents have been displaced due to the alberche river overflowing its banks. Similarly, in Campo Mejorada, forty-eight individuals were evacuated as a precaution against the rising waters of the Jarama and Henares rivers.

“The situation in escalona is critical, with many families displaced from their homes due to the unprecedented flooding.”

madrid Area Under Surveillance

While the situation in Madrid remains relatively stable, emergency services are maintaining close surveillance of the Manzanares and Jarama rivers. As of now, no remarkable measures have been implemented in the capital, but vigilance remains high. The authorities are closely monitoring water levels and are prepared to respond if conditions worsen.

Road Closures and Travel Disruptions

The storm has significantly impacted transportation networks across Spain. The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) reports that approximately sixty roads, including thirty-three secondary routes, remain affected by snow and rain. These conditions are causing delays and closures, urging travelers to exercise caution and check road conditions before embarking on journeys. Motorists are advised to consult real-time traffic updates and heed warnings issued by the DGT to ensure their safety.
