At least seven people died and one is still dispersed after a pleasure boat turned upside down during the weekend due to a sudden storm that agitated the waters of Lake Tahoe, in California, with strong winds and high waves, reported the authorities on Monday.
According to the Coast Guard of the United States, the Chris-Craft Underboard boat, 27 feet long, with 10 people on board, overturned near the banks of the DL Bliss State Park during a sudden storm that hit the Alpine Lake, known for its deep waters.
Two passengers survived the accident, while seven others died, including one whose body was recovered on Sunday. A person is still dispersed from Monday, communicated the office of the Sheriff of the County of El Dorado in a note published online. The identities of the victims are kept confidential waiting to inform family members.
Before the arrival of the storm, the time on the lake was relatively serene. Then, suddenly, the area was hit by twenty up to 30 knots and eight feet high waves, with a collapse of the temperatures of about 30 degrees Fahrenheit within a few minutes, the spokesperson for the coast guard, Chief Petty Officer Lauren Steenson, told Reuters.
After patrolling the waters of the lake for over 12 hours, the coast guard interrupted the searches for any other survivors on Sunday.
The accident occurred near the Bliss State Park, on the south-western bank of Lake Tahoe, the sixth largest freshwater lake in the United States for volume, after the five large lakes of the Midwest, and the deepest second after Crater Lake, in Oregon.
The main outdoor tourist destination, Lake Tahoe is located on the border between California and Nevada in the Sierra Nevada mountain range, and is also considered the largest Alpine lake in North America.
