Swiss Innovation Soars: A Record Year for Academic Patents

Switzerland has cemented its position as a global innovation powerhouse, achieving a record number of nearly 10,000 academic patents registered last year. The latest patent index from the European Patent Office (EPO) reveals that Switzerland leads the world in patent registrations per capita, underscoring the nation’s commitment to research and development.

This achievement marks the fourth consecutive year of growth in patent applications originating from Switzerland. The EPO reports an overall increase of 3.2 percent year-over-year, demonstrating a sustained upward trend in Swiss innovation.

Global Ranking and Key Players

While Switzerland excels on a per capita basis, it also holds a strong position in absolute figures. Ranking seventh globally, Switzerland trails behind innovation giants such as the United States, Germany, Japan, China, South Korea, and France.These nations represent the highest volume of overall patent applications.

Medical Technology Dominates, Computer Tech Surges

Within Germany, the medical technology sector leads the way with 1,045 patent submissions. Other prominent fields include measurement technology, consumer goods, and electrical machinery, apparatus, and energy. Though,the most significant growth was observed in computer technology,with a remarkable 37.4 percent increase compared to 2023. The EPO notes that this surge reflects a broader trend in technological advancements.

Roche and ABB Lead the Charge, Universities Shine

Among Swiss companies, Roche continues to be the top patent applicant, followed by ABB.Notably, the Federal Technical University of Lausanne (EPFL) has been recognized as the leading European university for patent applications. The ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich also secured spots in the top ten,highlighting the strong contribution of Swiss academic institutions to innovation.

Cantonal Contributions: Zurich Leads the Way

Breaking down the data by canton, Zurich emerges as the region with the highest number of patent applications. Vaud, Geneva, Zug, basel-Stadt, and Aargau follow closely behind.Together, these cantons account for nearly two-thirds of all Swiss patent applications, solidifying their status as key innovation hubs. All are represented among the top 25 European regions with the highest number of registrations.
