The new console has achieved unprecedented success, selling millions and disrupting the resale market.
As its release over a week ago, the Nintendo Switch 2 has become a major hit.
Nintendo not only achieved its biggest console launch ever, but the Switch 2 also surpassed previous records for console launches in both the U.S. and worldwide. furthermore, Nintendo appears to have effectively tackled the issue of scalpers by saturating the market with ample supply.
Nintendo reported on Tuesday that it has sold over 3.5 million units in the first four days following the Switch 2’s debut. According to the company, this makes the Switch successor the fastest-selling Nintendo gaming system to date.
But the record-breaking achievements don’t end there.
Matt Piscatella, executive director and video game industry analyst at Circana, stated that the Switch 2 launch in the U.S., with 1.1 million consoles sold, exceeded the PS4’s launch sales record from November 2013.
And LuigiBlood reported that the Switch 2 also broke the record for the biggest console launch worldwide.
Switch 2 Scalpers Struggle Amidst Ample Supply
The abundance of Switch 2 consoles has considerably impacted the resale market. Unlike previous console launches where scalpers capitalized on limited availability, the Switch 2’s widespread availability has made it difficult for resellers to command exorbitant prices.
“Nintendo figured out how to deal with the scalper problem: flooding the market.”
An analysis of sold Switch 2 consoles on eBay indicates that most sales range from $600 to $700. Higher-priced listings often include free shipping, which can cost between $10 and $20 depending on the buyer’s location.
the resale site StockX shows similar pricing, with the current “Buy Now” price for a Switch 2 Mario Kart World bundle at $630. Factoring in sales tax, shipping, and processing fees, the total cost can exceed $700 depending on the buyer’s state.
While a $100 to $200 markup over the $500 retail price might seem appealing to sellers, thay also face various fees. These include sales tax, which can range from zero in some states to as much as $50 in others. Additionally, eBay and StockX seller fees can range from 10% to 13%, although both platforms offer some discounts. Payment processing fees are also a factor.
Consequently, someone who purchased a switch 2 Mario Kart World bundle at retail and sold it for $600 might only profit around $40,depending on sales tax and other fees. This modest return hardly makes scalping a lucrative venture, and prices are unlikely to rise as long as Nintendo continues to restock consoles, as it has been doing since the Switch 2’s launch.
