According to a police spokesperson, the suspect is believed to be a 24-year-old asylum-seeker from Afghanistan.
Leaders Set to Arrive Amidst Security Concerns
US Vice President JD Vance and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, along with other diplomats, were due to arrive in Munich the day after the incident, ahead of the Munich Security Conference scheduled for the following day. The conference, a major annual meeting of international foreign and security officials, will be held 1.5 kilometers from where the attack took place.
A significant operation was launched by authorities near the city’s central train station to heighten security measures.
Details of the Attack
The incident took place around 10:30 AM local time near downtown Munich on Thursday. Eyewitnesses reported seeing police intervening, shooting at the vehicle. One witness found a person under the overturned car and attempted to open the door but was unsuccessful.
The driver was detained by police, who no longer consider him a threat, according to a statement on X.
Mayor’s Response
Munich Mayor Dieter Reiter expressed deep shock over the incident. He noted that some of the injured were children, adding a somber dimension to the tragedy.
Union’s Stance
The demonstration involved the service workers’ union Verdi, but the union had no information about the attack or the identities of the injured parties.
