Arrest Details
The suspect, Travis L. Ward, a 32-year-old man of Vancouver, appeared in Clark County Superior Court on charges of first-degree murder and two counts of first-degree assault. Ward’s criminal history includes convictions for being a felon in possession of a firearm and an Oregon charge for unlawful use of a weapon in 2021.
Incident Recap
The shooting occurred on Thursday, October 31, at 7:28 PM, when emergency responders found a man, James Perez, dead in the food court of the mall. Perez’s girlfriend had accompanied him to the mall for trick-or-treating with their children. Their son became separated from them, and they were looking for him when Perez was shot. Two other individuals, Brandon Leyrer and Daniel Martin, were also struck by bullets and treated at a local hospital before being released.
Court Orders and Witnesses
Court records indicate that Ward, having donned a "Joker" mask, followed Perez for a while before shooting him at point-blank range in the back of the head. Mall surveillance footage showed him firing several rounds after Perez dropped to the ground. Ward then fled the scene.
Judge John Fairgrieve ordered Ward to be held in the Clark County Jail without bail until a Thursday hearing on the matter.
Ward was witnessed with two women and a child, with one of the women later contacting police to confirm she is Ward’s girlfriend and was with him at the mall for trick-or-treating. She professed ignorance about the shooting.
