Surfer’s Record-Breaking Tidal Bore Ride | Video

by Archynetys Sports Desk

Dylan Graves, the acclaimed weird waves surfer hailing from Puerto Rico, has officially broken a Guinness World Record – most turns on a single wave.

The governing body of world record acknowledgement formally recognized Graves’ feat on Thursday, defining it as “most top turns/carves on a single wave,” although the the record-breaking went down back in March of 2023.

And just how many top turns/carves is the world record breaker? 46.

In Graves’ video breaking down his trip to The Bono (aka 7 Ghosts) tidal bore wave, where the 46-turn ride went down, he explains:

“A tidal bore is a wave that is formed due to an extreme change in tide. And the leading edge of that incoming tide forms a wave of water that gets bigger as it funnels up a narrow body of water. But what’s so special about this tidal bore, is that there’s a phenomenon inside of this already-existing phenomenon. It’s known as an undular bore – meaning there’s a wave front that’s followed by a secondary wave. In the case of this wave, there’s seven.”

The 7 Ghosts tidal bore has been surfed and documented in the past, particularly from Rip Curl’s “Search” trip to the novelty wave back in 2011. And that was the inspiration for Graves to go check it out for himself. And later…to score a world record.

Graves’ record comes off the heels of another obscure surfing feat, accomplished at yet another novelty wave, this one in Austria. Last month, Maximilian Neuböck, an Austrian wave-rider, rode a standing river wave for 8 hours, 5 minutes, and 44 seconds, earning him the honors of the longest open water wave surfed (male).”

It’s been a while since any more traditional surfing world records have been broken. Like world’s biggest wavewhich still stands with German Sebastian Steudtner from an 86-footer from Nazaré, Portugal in 2020. Perhaps this season we’ll see a new leader on the big wave charts?
