Supreme Court Customs Ruling: Global Uncertainty Returns

by Archynetys World Desk

From the United Kingdom to the European Union via Mexico, the United States’ trading partners reacted cautiously to the snub inflicted on Friday, February 20, by the Supreme Court to Donald Trump, when it declared a large part of the customs duties it had introduced illegal. In the wake of this decision, the American president imposed a new global tax of 10%, which replaces the so-called reciprocal customs duties imposed on a multitude of countries in April 2025.

The United Kingdom, whose exports are already taxed at 10%, displayed its serenity, explaining that “Whatever the scenario, we expect our privileged trade position with the United States to be maintained. » In France, the Minister of the Economy, Roland Lescure, preferred to draw attention to the widening American trade deficit to suggest to Washington that the increase in customs duties “is perhaps not the magic recipe we were hoping for”.

Canada is one of the rare countries to come out of its reservations and rely on the decision of the American Supreme Court to criticize Washington’s protectionist policy. The judgment “strengthens Canada’s position” which considers customs duties as “unjustified”, according to Dominic LeBlanc, the Canadian minister responsible for trade relations with the United States.
