James Gunn, head of DC Studios, recently revealed that Superman will grace the silver screen again in July 2027 wiht the premiere of Man of Tomorrow. While the proclamation might not shock those following Superman‘s box office success and Gunn’s prolific output within the DC Universe, the rapid turnaround for a Superman film has caught some by surprise. the central question now is whether Man of Tomorrow serves as a direct continuation or a fresh installment in the broader DC cinematic narrative.

Based on gunn’s statements, Man of Tomorrow isn’t a straightforward sequel or a Superman 2 in the customary sense. It’s definitely not Superman: Man of tomorrow. Instead, it’s positioned as the next installment of the “Superman saga”, following the upcoming Supergirl movie. However, Superman, portrayed by David Corenswet, is expected to play a “major role” in Man of Tomorrow, potentially sharing the spotlight with the iconic villain Lex Luthor, played by Nicholas Hoult.

Gunn’s cautious approach to divulging details about the forthcoming Superman movie could stem from a desire to maintain secrecy or a nuanced viewpoint on the definition of a sequel and the potential for a Superman 2. (This post certainly implies Gunn hasn’t written a Superman 2 script yet.)

“I’m not sure how you define ‘direct sequel,'” Gunn said in July in reply to a fan comment on Threads. “I pretty much think of Peacemaker season 2 as a direct sequel[to[toSuperman.]”

Peacemaker’s role

Peacemaker season 2 will also serve as a “Man of Tomorrow prequel,” according to Gunn. He emphasized the significance of Peacemaker‘s new season in an Instagram post on Thursdayalongside a photo of john Cena as Chris Smith standing over the actor who plays his alternate-dimension Peacemaker doppelgänger (very briefly) in season 2. The connection between Peacemaker season 2 and Man of Tomorrow,whether through a dual-dimension narrative or simply a behind-the-scenes element,remains to be seen.

Gunn has suggested that something significant will occur on peacemaker this season, potentially in episode 8, wich Gunn describes in Threads replies as one of his favorite episodes of the new season. (Will Superman show up?)

Certain elements are confirmed: Superman and Lex Luthor, portrayed by david Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult respectively, will both be in Man of Tomorrow. The appearance of Luthor’s Warsuit is highly probable, hinted at by the three pieces of artwork released with the announcement of Man of Tomorrow. The direction of the “Superman saga” and the adversary uniting Lex and Superman remain unknown.
