The Timeless Impact of Super Mario Bros. 3
The Mario franchise has captivated gamers for nearly 45 years, starting with Donkey Kong in 1981. Originally known as Jumpman, Mario underwent a transformation in the 1980s, evolving from a simple arcade character to the iconic superhero we recognize today. Early titles like Mario Bros. introduced his brother, Luigi, and laid the foundation for future adversaries such as the cunning Koopa Troopas.
However, nothing exemplifies the Mario ethos quite like Super Mario Bros., released in 1985 for the Nintendo Entertainment System. This game revolutionized platform gaming with smooth side-scrolling, consistent music, and hidden secrets, setting a benchmark for interactivity. Following its success, Nintendo quickly released sequels, culminating in the groundbreaking Super Mario Bros. 3, initially released in Japan on March 31, 1990. Its United States release on February 12, 1990, marked its global debut.
The Development and Release of Super Mario Bros. 3
Like Flying in SMB3, Nintendo Needed Some Momentum
Super Mario Bros. brought Nintendo to international fame, but with this came increased pressure to innovate. When the American branch of Nintendo deemed the Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2 too similar and challenging, they repurposed another game, Doki Doki Panic, into the Super Mario Bros. 2 we know. Just a year later in 1990, Super Mario Bros. 3 was released in the U.S., though it faced delays due to limited ROM chips and concurrent releases.
Interestingly, Super Mario Bros. 3 was initially conceived as an isometric platformer, reminiscent of Sonic 3D Blast, but ultimately remained a 2D side-scroller in the style of the original.

Super Mario Bros. 3’s Story and Gameplay
Like Many NES Games, SMB3 Tells Its Story Through Its Manual
The story of Super Mario Bros. 3 unfolds in the Mushroom Kingdom, where Bowser and his Koopalings turn the kings into bizarre animals. Peach gets kidnapped, sending Mario and Luigi on an adventure through eight diverse worlds to rescue her and restore peace to the Mushroom Kingdom. The game introduces new power-ups, like the Raccoon Tail, Tanooki Suit, and Frog Suit, allowing Mario to fly, transform into a statue, and swim better.
“I kept wondering if Mario and a raccoon was the right match.”
Director Takashi Tezuka experimented with various ideas, questioning whether Mario and a raccoon made sense together.
