Sugar Plum Sweetery’s Viral ‘Dubai Chocolate’ Bar Takes Ireland by Storm
Business is booming at a small chocolatier in Mullingar, Co. Westmeath, Ireland, since the introduction of a unique and viral chocolate bar known as the ‘Dubai Chocolate.’ Chocolatier Denise Buckley and her team at Sugar Plum Sweetery welcomed the tidal wave of excitement and demand with open arms.
The ‘Dubai Chocolate’ bar, created by Dubai-based entrepreneur Sarah Hamouda, has become a sensations across TikTok and beyond. Hamouda developed this pistachio-tahini infused confection in search of a unique dessert to satisfy her pregnancy cravings for a childhood favorite: knafeh. Her creation has transformed the Irish chocolate landscape, catching the eye and sweet tooth of people from Cork, Donegal, Galway, and beyond.
An Epicurean Sensation
“It’s been fantastic seeing people from all corners of the country visiting us to experience our Dubai bar first-hand,” Buckley said. “Queues have formed outside the shop, and we have to set limits on how many bars each customer can purchase, both online and in-store.”
With a爆款 like the ‘Dubai Chocolate,’ coupled with pressures of staffing and ingredient prices, Buckley faces challenges and joys in scaling Sugar Plum Sweetery. “We began with a team of five employees and now we’re looking after approximately 25 colleagues, with the shop expanding over the past four to five weeks,” Buckley said.
The Big Picture of Business
Business has been rocky at times. Buckley and her small team encountered various hurdles, especially during Sugar Plum Sweetery’s early years. Ingredients like cocoa and sugar skyrocketed in price. Sugar alone increased by 60%, while cocoa price increases varied between 90-100% over the last nine months.
“Business has been challenging. When we opened, things like the cost of sugar were a significant concern, and cocoa prices have really risen,” Buckley mentioned. The introduction of a popular product like the Dubai bar provided some relief from these pressing issues.
A Craft Brewed in Dublin
Denise Buckley admits that the Dubai Chocolate bar’s recipe emphasizes traditional Irish butter, bringing out unique flavors. “Our chocolatiers work day and night to ensure everyone can experience this bar, which takes up to four hours to craft each batch,” Buckley highlighted.
A Lasting Hit
The Dubai Chocolate bar’s acceptance seems boundless. People return frequently, eager to seek and share their enthusiasm on social media. Buckley mentioned her team’s plan to build on this success with new products inspired by the dessert. “The Dubai bar is here to stay. We are developing new products around it, which is great news for fans,” Buckley described.
Christmas to Chocolate Boons
Ironically, January always brings a chill. However, Sugar Plum Sweetery has found success in January 2023. Buckley expressed joy over increased sales despite challenges posed by seasonal demands and ingredient prices. “Who would have thought everyone would be eating so much chocolate in January?” Buckley inquired with a smile, reflecting on how the rising sales contrast with January’s usual slow period.

Wrapping Up
Sugar Plum Sweetery found the perfect product to redefine their sales and business strategy. Decades-old product development experience and innovative product like the Dubai Chocolate bar worked together to provide a unique, memorable dessert.
For Buckley, finding the Dubai Chocolate bar meant far more than commercial success. She sees it as an opportunity to foster community and bring joy to customers from all corners of Ireland. “The size of our staff growth and the tremendous positive reactions have been the real markers of success for us.”
