Inter Miami secured a spot in the semifinals of the CUP Leagues, defeating Tigers from mexico in a Wednesday quarterfinal match, even without lionel Messi. Luis Suarez converted two penalties to seal the victory.

Messi, who led his team to a victory against the Los Angeles Galaxy on Saturday in the MLS, did not participate in Wednesday’s game due to not training.

“We all chat with Leo,” said javier Morales, assistant of coach Javier Mascherano, in statements to journalists.”The truth is that we are always present and as Javier said yesterday, all clear from the sensations that Leo has, and Javier had a conversation with Leo to see how the sensations were, which were not the best.

“We prefer not to risk and not get back in time, and go to the sure that it was not playing.”

Suarez’s first penalty came after a center from Jordi Alba struck the arm of Tigres defender, Javier Aquino. Ángel Correa equalized for Tigres, breaking through the defense. Later, Aquino again handled the ball, leading to Suarez’s second penalty and the winning goal.

Edgar López nearly scored for Tigres with a header, but the ball hit both posts.

Controversy on the Sidelines

“We complain about time. They said four minutes (added time) and ended up playing like six,” said Morales.

Mascherano received a red card before the second half. He was then seen using a phone and giving instructions, a violation of CUP Leagues rules.

“I didn’t see what was happening. To be honest, many things happened on the bench,” Morales added when asked about the presence of Mascherano giving telephone instructions.

Jordi Alba also exited the game early in the second half after suffering a leg injury in a collision late in the first half.

“We still don’t have the medical report, but from what I understand, he received a blow to the knee.”

In other matches, Orlando City defeated Toluca, and the Seattle Sounders beat puebla in a penalty shootout, eliminating two more Mexican teams from the MLS.

Both of those games ended in scoreless draws after regular time.

The Los Angeles Galaxy later had a chance to complete a sweep of Mexican teams when they faced Pachuca.
