Eugenio Suárez on Track to Challenge Miguel Cabrera‘s Extrabases Record

The Arizona D-backs third baseman is having a stellar season and could match a record held by the legendary Miguel Cabrera.

Eugenio Suárez continued his extraordinary season on Sunday, contributing to the Arizona D-backs’ 4-2 defeat against the Colorado Rockies.

The Venezuelan player went 4-1 with a double at Coors Field, maintaining his focus on achieving a meaningful record.

Eugenio Suárez‘s performance on Sunday increased his total extrabases to 40 this season. This not only puts him in the lead among his fellow countrymen but also projects him to reach 84 extrabases by the end of the campaign.

If the Ciudad Piar native maintains this pace, he could equal the record for a third baseman from Venezuela, set by Miguel Cabrera in 2012, according to Baseball Reference.

Miguel Cabrera, who achieved the Triple Crown and was named the American League’s Most Valuable Player in 2012, established the extrabases record for Venezuelan third basemen during what would be his penultimate year playing full-time at the position. In 2014, he transitioned to first base and eventually concluded his career as a designated hitter due to persistent physical challenges.

Eugenio suárez added to his total of extra-base hits with a double against fellow countryman Antonio Senzatela in the second inning of Sunday’s game. This hit marked the Simplest moment of the game, a soft slider hit to left field.

The Guayanese player is now only five extrabases away from tying the overall Venezuelan record, irrespective of position, which is shared by Andrés galarraga (who achieved it with the Rockies in 1996) and Richard Hidalgo (who did it with the Astros in 2000), both with 89.
