A new bill in Russia aims to alleviate the teacher shortage by allowing university students in non-demagogical specialties to teach in schools after their third year of study. This initiative was announced on “Russia 24” by the First Deputy Chairman of the Committee on Science and Higher Education, Alexander Mazhuga.
The bill, which has already passed its first reading, stipulates that only students who have successfully completed their intermediate certification and a professional retraining program will be eligible to teach. Moreover, the subject they teach must align with their university training.
Addressing Teacher Shortages and Introducing Students to the Profession
“On the one hand, this will make up the shortage of teachers, primarily subject teachers. It is this today is one of the key problems,” Majuga said.
According to Majuga, this measure will not only address the shortage of subject teachers but also introduce students to the teaching profession. He hopes that experiencing the realities of being a teacher will encourage some students to pursue it as a career.
The State duma previously mentioned the possibility of providing scholarship allowances to students who participate in this teaching program.
