In 2025, jeans are whatever you want them to be: skinny, baggy, dark or light wash, ripped, recycled or chewed up. Yet, it seems that (if not you) most consumers just want regular jeans. What men’s fashion writer Leon Hedgepeth once called Goldilocks – “Goldilocks” – and which Marlon Brando, Robert Redford and Kate Moss (among others) have made popular in alternating phases of Mode. The last one was in the 1990s, when trousers that were neither too loose nor too tight were renamed “cigarette” – which is another way of referring to the fabric that hangs perpendicular to the leg rather than clinging like tinfoil on bread or spreading out like a freshly baked soufflé.
But “cigarette” blended better with that grunge aesthetic that the Marc Jacob-Kate Moss duo was bringing to the fore. And here in the age of -core like shoe polish on every vaguely stylistic word, in the time when every option is available omnichannelthe anxiety of options leads us towards the simplest thing in terms of cut and weight. “The perfect jeans” like the chair of Goldilocks and Little Bear, is – claims the editor of Harper’s Bazaar Samira Nasr – neither too big nor too soft, but just right”. And this explains the name of Goldilocks.
The return to fashion of the so-called “midpoint of fashion” was recently explained by the editorialist of The Guardian as a response to a general feeling of tiredness. “A collective sigh of fashion”. That is, after years of running to the extremes – either super-skinny or ultra-baggy – the desire has once again gravitated to the uniform cut from hip to ankle, clean, effortless, that looks good on everyone.
