Catalonia Grapples with Rising STI Rates: Experts Advocate for Comprehensive Sexual Health Education
Public health officials in Catalonia are addressing a concerning increase in sexually transmitted infections (STIs), prompting calls for enhanced education and prevention strategies.
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs),once the focus of intense prevention campaigns in the 1980s and 90s,are again a significant public health concern. While HIV infections have been managed effectively, Europe is experiencing a surge in other STIs, particularly in Catalonia, which has the highest incidence of chlamydia and gonorrhea in Spain.
Experts suggest that the rise in STIs in Catalonia may be linked to the widespread use of hormonal contraceptives and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV prevention.
STI Incidence Surges in catalonia
A November 2024 study by the Generalitat de Catalunya’s Department of Health revealed a concerning trend: between 2010 and 2023, the incidence of STIs in the region increased by an average of 32.4% annually.
In response, the management is focusing on education and prevention, promoting condom use, risk awareness, and safe sexual behaviors, alongside early detection and contact tracing.
“There is a correlation between the elements of everyday structural violence and STIs.”
