Northern Ireland’s Club Successes Boost International Prospects

Coach Steven Davis highlights how club achievements of players like Conor Bradley, Justin Devenny, Trai Hume, and Dan Ballard can elevate the national team’s performance.

According to first team coach Steven Davis, the recent successes of several Northern Ireland players at their clubs are expected to enhance their contributions to the international squad. These achievements come at a crucial time, as the team prepares for friendlies against Denmark on June 7 and Iceland on June 10.

davis emphasized the importance of club-level progression for international readiness. “You just have to look at some of the individual seasons the players have had, obviously Conor [Bradley] winning the Premier League [with Liverpool]Justin Devenny winning the FA Cup [with Crystal palace] and Trai Hume and Dan Ballard being promoted to the Premier League with Sunderland,” said Davis in an interview.

He added,”It’s vital that the players continue to progress at their clubs and that’s what they’re doing, they just have to continue to develop. Ultimately they come in better placed into the international set-up if that’s the case.”

Progression and preparation

Davis, a 140-times capped international, noted the team’s positive trajectory over the past 12 to 18 months, including strong results and topping their Nations League group.

“These games are vital as the time you get with the players is so limited in international football.”

The upcoming friendlies are designed to fine-tune the team ahead of world Cup qualifying matches in September.

“These games are vital because the time you get with the players is so limited in international football so whenever you do get together it’s important you maximise that time, reinforce your ideas and add layers to them,” Davis stated.

Facing Stiff Competition

Davis acknowledged the challenges ahead in the World Cup qualifiers. “We’re coming up against stiff opposition [in World Cup qualifying] in Germany, Slovakia and Luxembourg, it’s a tough group but these two games coming up are great preparation for us.”
