The music world mourned the passing of One Direction star Liam Payne in October 2024. However, the death of another iconic pop star from the 1990s, Stephen Gately of Boyzone, still echoes through the hearts of music fans worldwide. Gately’s untimely demise brought intense sorrow to fans and friends alike.

A Breakdown of Stephen Gately’s Final Night

Just 33 years old, Stephen Gately died tragically in the arms of his partner, Andrew Cowles, after a night out in Mallorca on October 10, 2009. The couple was celebrating their success with Boyzone in a luxurious €1.2 million holiday home, constructed for a month-long getaway immediately following a grueling tour.

Stephen and Andrew spent a quiet evening, savoring dinner at one of their favorite restaurants and enjoying a night out at the pub. They returned home at around 5:30 AM and settled onto the couch, where Stephen fell sound asleep. Andrew, unaware of the dire circumstances, retired to his bedroom at 8:30 AM.

The Late Night Discovery

The tragedy unfolded a few hours later at around 1:30 PM, when the Bulgarian student Georgi awoke to smoke a cigarette. Upon entering the living area, Georgi discovered Stephen hadn’t moved all night. Terrified, he rushed to Stephen’s side, unable to detect a pulse.

Georgi described the apocalyptic event in an interview with The Sun in 2014, stating, “I went to take his pulse and couldn’t find one. I knew he was dead.”

He recounted how Andrew, upon learning of Stephen’s passing, rushed to his side, desperately attempting resuscitation. Neither their efforts nor Georgi’s could revive Stephen Gately.

The grim reality was confirmed by medical professionals who pronounced Stephen dead at 2:25 PM. A subsequent post-mortem examination revealed he had died from natural causes approximately eight hours prior to being discovered.

Stephen Gately’s Unsuspected Health Condition

The cause of Stephen Gately’s death was an undetected heart condition known as atheromatosis, leading to the thickening of his arteries and fluid accumulation in his lungs. This aquatic-like congestion ultimately proved fatal.

The Aftermath

Remarkably, at the time of his death, Stephen was reportedly worth £10 million. However, he had accumulated substantial debts, amounting to almost €2.2 million, and did not have a will in place.

The settlement process left €1.7 million to be distributed. Andrew Cowles and Stephen’s parents shared this inheritance equally.
