Staying Active at Age 85: My Journey to Staying Mobile Until 100

by Archynetys Health Desk

As the gym becomes a focal point during the New Year, many resolutions revolve around slimming down and toning up. However, for some, like an 85-year-old woman determined to reach 100, staying fit presents unique challenges. Despite her personal aversion to exercise, she has embarked on a journey to fulfill her promise to her grandson.

The Push to Longerevity

Determined to live to 100, she maintains strong motivation. Her doctor, Deborah, plays a crucial role in her health management. Monthly knee injections for pain relief are a regular occurrence. Recently, Deborah advised light activity for a few days to ease her recovery. This restriction provided a moment of joy, much to her delight.

Embracing a New Routine

Initially reluctant, she eventually consulted Natalie, a fitness instructor. Under Natalie’s guidance, she began a weekly exercise routine, which the family affectionately calls her personal training. Despite her playful resistance, Natalie ensures she follows the regimen.

The sessions include warming up, sit-to-stands, arm exercises with weights, and stretching. On particularly strenuous days, they even include press-ups and some balance exercises. Natalie ends the sessions with a fun game of balloon toss, adding an element of enjoyment.

Maintaining Movement at Home

Between sessions, she incorporates small physical activities into her daily routine. Standing on her toes while waiting for the kettle to boil is one example. She believes in moving every 15 minutes, even if it’s just a short walk across the room.

A Lifetime of Unlikely Athlete

Her reluctance to exercise isn’t new. From a young age, she was often the reluctant participant during gym class. Netball practice and gymnastics were particularly daunting. The one sport she enjoyed was swimming in the sea, a passion she has carried into her retirement.

Aging Gracefully with Purpose

She admits that her aversion to exercise hasn’t diminished over the years, but her purpose has. At 85, she finds motivation in staying active for her longevity. Daily walks, duck-watching at the Blessington Basin, and occasional trips to the Botanic Gardens are part of her routine.

On days when energy levels are low, she even takes short walks in the local Tesco. Her consistency is driven by the belief that movement is essential for mobility, “Move it or you’ll lose it” is her mantra.

Lessons from the Journey

While some might question her late start to an exercise routine, she holds the belief that it’s never too late to begin. Her story highlights the importance of staying active, even when it’s not always easy.

It’s a testament to her journey, driven by her promise to her grandson and her desire to maintain her independence and health.

Looking Forward

As she continues her commitment to staying active, her story serves as an inspiration. Whether it’s weekly sessions with Natalie or simply standing up and walking around, her focus remains on longevity. Her dedication to her health is a beacon for others, showing that it’s possible to make positive changes at any age.
