Rantanen’s journey to Dallas began after an incident involving a hook by Caroline while he was with the Hurricanes on January 24th. Contract negotiations stalled, leading to a trade to the Stars, who promptly offered him an eight-year, $96 million contract. He previously faced the Avalanche once this season, contributing two assists in a 4-3 defeat.

After a scoreless first period, despite the Avalanche having a significant five-on-three power play opportunity for nearly a minute and a half, Artturi Lehkonen broke the deadlock with a memorable goal in the second period.

Following a shot that was initially blocked by Stars’ goalie jake Oettinger, Lehkonen, while falling, managed to redirect the puck into the net with his skate, catching Oettinger off guard. This unconventional goal ignited the game and provided the Avalanche with a crucial lead.

Rantanen’s situation is noteworthy,placing him among a select group of players.He is only the fourth player in the last 30 years to face a team in the playoffs against whom he has accumulated over 100 career points. The others include Jaromir Jagr (vs. Pittsburgh),Brett Hull (vs. saint Louis), and Jari Kurri (vs. Edmonton).

Rantanen was a major asset in the history of the avalanche since in 81 eliminatory parts, he totaled 101 points, including 34 goals. He won the Stanley Cup with the avalanche in 2022.

This series marks the seventh playoff encounter between the Avalanche and the Stars, and their third in the last six seasons. Dallas has emerged victorious in the previous two playoff series against Colorado.

Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar is on the verge of a significant milestone. with 80 points (21 goals, 59 assists) in 72 games, he is just one point away from equaling Peter Stastny (81 points) for fifth place in franchise history for points scored (Avalanche/Nordiques). Nathan MacKinnon also has the potential to reach a milestone. With 48 goals in the playoffs, he could become only the third player in Avalanche/Nordiques history to score 50 playoff goals, joining Joe Sakic (84) and Peter Forsberg (58).

For the Stars, goaltender Jake Oettinger is set to surpass Marty Turco for the second-most playoff games played by a Stars/North Stars goalie. Oettinger has 23 wins and 22 losses in 47 playoff games.
