Starlink’s Launch in Bhutan: Affordable Internet and Fresh Competition Ahead
Jigmi Wangdi
The entry of Starlink into Bhutan marks a significant shift in the country’s internet landscape. This development not only promises high-speed connectivity but also introduces fresh competition to the market, which has traditionally been dominated by two major players: Bhutan Telecom and TashiCell.
Starlink’s Timely Arrival
Starlink Services Private Limited announced its launch in Bhutan on February 11, 2024, just under seven months after the government began discussions to bring the service to the country. This strategic move aims to address long-standing issues related to affordability and accessibility of internet services.
Service Offerings and Pricing
According to the Bhutan Internet and Communications Authority (BICMA), Starlink will provide a range of services including residential, priority, mobile priority, roam, and residential lite options. Flexibility and affordability are key features of Starlink, with a local payment gateway currently in development.
BICMA data reveals that Starlink’s residential plan is priced at Nu 4,200 per month, offering download speeds of 25 to 110 Mbps and upload speeds of 5 to 10 Mbps, both with unlimited data.
In comparison, Bhutan Telecom’s Internet Leased Line (ILL) service charges Nu 5,500 for 10 Mbps, while TashiCell offers the same bandwidth for Nu 8,700.
For higher bandwidths, TashiCell’s ILL plan ranges from Nu 935 for 5 to 8 Mbps to Nu 550 per Mbps for connections exceeding 100 Mbps. For example, a five Mbps plan from TashiCell under the ILL would cost Nu 4,675, while a 100 Mbps connection would cost a substantial Nu 55,000.
Starlink’s priority plans for businesses and high-demand users start at Nu 5,900 for 40 GB and increase to Nu 106,000 for six terabytes (TB) of data, offering significantly higher allowances than current options from local providers.
Hardware Costs and Long-Term Benefits
Starlink’s hardware options range from Nu 17,000 for the Mini Starlink Kit to Nu 231,000 for the Flat High-Performance Kit, excluding shipping costs.
Although the initial investment for Starlink equipment might be high for some users, experts believe that the long-term benefits of high-speed and low-latency internet could make it a worthwhile investment.
Accessibility and Flexibility
One of Starlink’s major advantages is its ability to reach remote areas where traditional providers often struggle due to infrastructure limitations. This could be particularly beneficial for businesses, educational institutions, healthcare centers, and government agencies that require reliable high-speed internet.
Another key difference is the flexibility of Starlink’s plans, which contrasts with the fixed-rate structure of ILL services offered by Bhutan Telecom and TashiCell.
Starlink’s options allow for scalability and flexibility, making them more attractive to a broader user base, from individual households to enterprises.
Payment Gateway Development
Currently, Starlink payments are conducted in USD, but a local payment gateway is being developed to accept payments in Ngultrums. Starlink Services Pvt. Limited is working on making its services available with local currency payments, ensuring that interested users can purchase Starlink equipment in their native currency.
Conclusion
Starlink’s arrival in Bhutan signifies a promising change in the telecommunications sector. With its affordable pricing, high-speed connectivity, and flexibility, Starlink is poised to disrupt the market dominated by Bhutan Telecom and TashiCell. While the initial investment for hardware can be significant, the potential benefits could be substantial, especially for remote areas and businesses requiring reliable internet access.
As Starlink continues to evolve its services in Bhutan, it will be interesting to see how it impacts the local market and improves internet accessibility for Bhutanese users.
