National Award-Winning Actress Sruthi Hariharan Inaugurates HPV Vaccination Drive in Bengaluru

The vaccination campaign will continue in multiple phases across Bengaluru and Chennai.

In a heartening development, a new initiative aimed at protecting young girls from cervical cancer was launched in Bengaluru. Spearheaded by tech company Tekion in collaboration with the Jivika Foundation, this program offers free HPV vaccinations to underprivileged girls.

The first phase of the vaccination drive was inaugurated by renowned actress Sruthi Hariharan and gynecologist Dr. Padmini Prasad. This move highlights the commitment of celebrities and medical professionals to reducing the prevalence of cervical cancer among economically disadvantaged communities.

The campaign will span multiple phases, covering areas in both Bengaluru and Chennai. By focusing on young girls in underserved communities, organizers aim to raise awareness and promote the widespread adoption of the HPV vaccine.

The Urgency of Preventing Cervical Cancer

Cervical cancer is a significant public health concern, particularly in India, where it ranks as one of the most prevalent types of cancer. According to the National Institute of Cancer Prevention and Research (NICPR), approximately 123,000 new cases and 67,500 deaths are reported annually in the country.

Caused by prolonged HPV infection, which results in abnormal cell growth in the cervix, cervical cancer is a preventable disease. Lifestyle factors can contribute to its development, making early prevention and regular screening crucial.

Effective Prevention Strategies

HPV vaccines are available and recommended for both girls and boys to prevent high-risk HPV strains responsible for most cervical cancer cases. These vaccines are a proactive approach to safeguarding public health.

In addition to vaccination, regular Pap smears and HPV testing are essential for early detection. These screening methods allow for timely treatment, significantly improving outcomes and reducing mortality rates.
