Weeks after announcing price increases, Spotify has launched a new chat function, enabling users to share music, podcasts, and audiobooks directly within the app. While the feature is currently limited,it aims to streamline content sharing and discussion.
The music streaming giant, Spotify, is entering the direct messaging arena, joining the ranks of WhatsApp, Signal, Facebook Messenger, and Telegram. This new feature allows users to send direct messages to one another, enhancing how they share and discuss content on the platform.
Following recent price hikes and restrictions on password sharing by streaming services like Disney+ and Netflix, Spotify is introducing this long-awaited chat function. The goal is to simplify the process of sharing music, podcasts, and audiobooks, allowing users to comment on recommendations with both text and emojis.
How the Spotify Chat Function Works
The new feature facilitates one-on-one discussions where users can share Spotify content and react using text and emojis. Access to messages is located via the userS profile picture, as there is no dedicated icon within the app.
- Share Spotify content and initiate in-app messages with users you’ve previously interacted with on Spotify.
- When listening to a song, podcast, or audiobook, tap the share icon in the “Current Repetition” view, select a friend, and click “Send.”
- Once a message request is accepted, you can react with emojis, send text messages, and seamlessly share Spotify content. Access messages by clicking your profile picture in the upper left corner.
Currently, group chats are not supported, and the feature is unavailable in Europe and the USA. The chat function is initially launching in Latin and South America. unlike WhatsApp and Signal, Spotify’s messages are encrypted but not end-to-end. Spotify states this is to monitor violations of regulations, indicating that they scan messages and may have personnel review them. Users can also report violations within the chat.
