By Anya Sharma | LOS ANGELES – 2025/06/07 11:10:10
The unveiling of Splitgate 2 and its new Battle Royale mode at Summer Game Fest was intended too highlight the multiplayer shooter’s evolution. Tho, the event was largely overshadowed by the actions of the studio manager.
Ian proulx, the studio manager, wore a black cap emblazoned with the phrase “Make FPS Great Again,” a clear allusion to a well-known political slogan.
The hat sparked considerable reaction across social media platforms. Many users expressed embarrassment over the choice, while others voiced frustration at the intrusion of politics into a gaming event.
Splitgate 2 is out now on PC, PlayStation and Xbox.

Adding to the controversy, Proulx‘s remarks about reviving the first-person shooter genre preceded the announcement of the Battle Royale mode, which some perceived as a departure from that goal.
Social Media and Steam Reviews react
“If I was a developer and I had spent years working on a game, and my boss went on stage and looked like such a big idiot. Than I had been incredibly pissed,”
A user on Reddit commented, “Battle Royale seems cool, but the whole monologue seemed pretty stupid? I’m tired of the same games and want to return to what’s cool. Here’s a Battle Royale.”
The negativity extended to Splitgate 2‘s Steam reviews, where a wave of negative feedback following Summer Game Fest led to a drop in the game’s overall rating, settling at “mixed” with only 67 percent positive reviews.
