Unexpected Detour: A Blackout Disrupts Travel plans
Fresh off their participation in the World Championship in Orlando, Florida, the Italian cheerleading national team, including five athletes from the Nazarene Polisportiva di Carpi – elisa Santini, Marta Scacchetti Lucacalce, Arianna dell’Arcipreite, Sara Garuti, and Francesca Feoli – experienced a grueling ordeal trying to return home.A widespread blackout that impacted Portugal, Spain, and France on April 28th threw their travel plans into disarray, leaving them stranded at Lisbon Airport.
The Blackout’s Impact: Chaos and Uncertainty
Sara Sabattini, coach of Flames Senior and social manager of Team Italia, recounted the moment the lights went out. “We were ready to board when the blackout hit,” she explained. The team had traveled from Orlando to miami, then to Lisbon, anticipating a 12:40 flight to Milan. However, the power outage brought everything to a standstill.
Initial communication was sparse and unhelpful. “We were repeatedly told to call back later,” sabattini stated, highlighting the difficulty in getting information from the airline and travel agency. The situation outside the airport was equally bleak. “It was as if the city had died,” she said, describing empty streets and a lack of transportation.
Airport Ordeal: Hunger, Cold, and Makeshift Accommodation
As hours passed, the cheerleaders found themselves stuck at the airport, struggling to find basic necessities. With vending machines and POS systems out of service, obtaining food and water became a challenge. “There were kilometer-long queues. Shops were overwhelmed, and shelves were emptied,” Sabattini described, comparing the scene to a post-disaster situation.
After contacting the Italian embassy in rome, the Portuguese authorities provided water and biscuits. However, the team was forced to spend the night at the airport, sleeping on the floor without blankets.”Our backpacks served as pillows,” Sabattini said, emphasizing the lack of available hotel accommodations.
Delayed Return and Medical Concerns
after enduring a night of discomfort, the team received some positive news. “Around 10 AM,we were offered cots in the airport garage,” Sabattini reported. The team’s departure was rescheduled for May 2nd,and efforts were underway to secure hotel accommodations.
Adding to the team’s challenges, two athletes sustained injuries during the competition. Francesca Feoli is scheduled to return to Italy early for medical evaluation of her ankle. Despite the pain, Sabattini assured that both athletes are doing well, considering the circumstances.
The Broader Context: Power Grid Vulnerabilities
This incident highlights the vulnerability of interconnected power grids. According to a recent report by the International Energy agency (IEA), investments in grid modernization are crucial to prevent widespread blackouts and ensure energy security. the IEA estimates that global investments in electricity grids need to increase by 60% by 2030 to meet growing demand and improve grid resilience.
