Vast Space Eyes ISS for Private Crew Missions: A Stepping Stone to the Future of Space?
SpaceX continues to make waves in the private spaceflight industry, with a recent announcement confirming two new private astronaut missions to the International Space Station (ISS). The missions are slated to be conducted by Vast Space, a California-based company aiming to build a self-sustaining private space station, Haven-1, and its successor, Haven-2, as a potential replacement for the ISS.
Vast Space’s Ambitious Plans
Haven-1, a pathfinder station, is envisioned to launch as early as 2024 atop a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. This upcoming mission signifies a critical step for Vast Space, forging a pathway for their future endeavors. They aim to utilize these private astronaut missions to the ISS as a testing ground, refining their expertise in human spaceflight operations and collaborating closely with NASA and global space agencies.
According to Vast Space CEO Max Haot, "These missions not only strengthen our expertise in human spaceflight operations and collaboration with NASA, but also position Vast as a leading contender to deliver the next-generation successor to the ISS, advancing the future of human space exploration."
Haven-2: The Next Generation
Vast Space is also vying to be chosen for NASA’s Commercial Low Earth Orbit Destination (CLOD) program. Their proposed Haven-2 space station, a more comprehensive and advanced version of Haven-1, could be operational in low Earth orbit (LEO) by 2028. This exciting development would occur just ahead of the ISS’ planned retirement, offering a seamless transition to a privately operated station.
Private Astronaut Missions: The New Frontier
NASA has already approved four private astronaut missions (PAMs) to the ISS, all conducted by Axiom Space. These missions demonstrate the growing interest in utilizing the ISS as a platform for private space exploration and commercialization.
Vast Space’s proposed flights to the ISS await NASA’s final approval. However, SpaceX has expressed its readiness to launch these missions at the appointed time, marking a significant step forward for Vast Space’s ambition.
Space: The Future is Now!
This partnership between SpaceX, Vast Space, and NASA highlights the rapid progress being made in the commercial space sector. It paves the way for a future where space exploration and research are no longer solely the domain of government agencies, but accessible to a broader range of public and private entities.
