A Concert for Change: Premiere of “Sound Reflections”
The Gayarre Theater is set to host the premiere of “Sound Reflections” on Saturday, may 17th, at 8:00 PM. This unique performance aims to use music and spoken word to explore pressing contemporary issues, including environmental concerns, abuse, war, immigration, and poverty. The project is spearheaded by Navarrese musician Jose Arcaya and produced by Imaginascene events and interaction.
The Artistic Ensemble: A Symphony of Voices
Arcaya, formerly of Magdalena and Arcanda, has assembled a talented group of musicians for this project. The ensemble includes Alfredo Olaverri on drums, Alfredo Iribarren “Escarolo” on bass, Bernardo San Martín Urabayen on keyboards, Koldo Left Mendibil on guitar, and Amaia Olano Martia providing backing vocals. The performance also features voice-over contributions from Ana Valencia, Luis Cortina, Irune Jiménez, Ventura Ruiz, txori García, and Jose Mari Así, who will provide context and narration alongside audiovisual elements.
From Inaction to Art: the Genesis of “Sound Reflections”
The “Sound Reflections” project began a year ago, born from Arcaya’s feelings of helplessness and societal indifference towards global issues. Arcaya describes the project as a response to the comfort and security that often shields individuals from harsh realities. He emphasizes the importance of confronting these issues, stating:
Individual reflections take me from the world of dreams and the imagination that often habit, towards a reality of terrible situations, most of the times imposed by force, power or greed,to which I attend as a privileged spectator from the comfort and comfort of an alleged security.
Jose Arcaya
Arcaya underscores the necessity of facing the present, even when it’s painful, and challenges the audience to consider their role in addressing injustice. He believes that indifference perpetuates these problems, and “Sound Reflections” is an attempt to break through that apathy.
We will have to learn to look with new eyes. Think that if I am not part of the solution I am part of the problem because indifference is the silent support for injustice. Reflections made music and words wrapped in light and images about situations that we often avoid seeing … but they are there.
Jose Arcaya
A Thematic Journey: Music as a Mirror to Reality
The show is structured around thematic cycles, primarily featuring Arcaya’s original compositions. However, the performance also includes covers of iconic songs such as John Lennon’s “Imagine,” Vincent Ford’s “No Woman No Cry,” and Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes.” These selections complement the show’s overarching themes and provide a familiar entry point for the audience.
Beyond Entertainment: Sparking Dialog and Reflection
“Sound Reflections” is not intended to provide easy answers or solutions. Instead, the goal is to awaken consciences and encourage critical thinking. The creators hope the audience will be moved to consider their own actions and contributions to a more just and equitable world. The performance aims to “touch, enjoy, and stop to think about what we can or should do.” This aligns with a growing trend of using art as a form of social commentary and activism, as seen in various movements and performances worldwide.
