Soros Foundation Is Expelled From Kyrgyzstan 2024-04-17 03:44:51

by drbyos

The Soros-Kyrgyzstan Foundation is ceasing its activities in the republic due to the adoption of the law on non-profit organizations, Day.Az reports with reference to the Kyrgyz media.

It is noted that the fund ceased its activities due to new legislative requirements.

The closure of the fund was preceded by correspondence between the President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Japarov and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, in which the head of the Kyrgyz state called on Washington not to interfere in the internal affairs of Kyrgyzstan.

Amendments to the law “On Non-Profit Organizations”, called the “law on foreign agents”, were signed by the President of Kyrgyzstan on April 2. The changes tighten operating rules for non-governmental (NGO) and non-profit (NPO) organizations. In particular, now authorized government agencies will be able to demand additional reporting from organizations that receive money from foreign donors and attend their events, and the tax service is allowed to conduct unscheduled inspections. NGOs and non-profit organizations recognized as “foreign representatives” will be required to accompany their publications with appropriate labeling.

House Republicans Send Impeachment‍ Articles Against Homeland Security Secretary

House Republicans have taken a significant step by sending two articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to the Senate. This move initiates a trial in the Senate, with GOP lawmakers aiming to draw attention to President Joe Biden’s management of immigration policy.

Despite the efforts of House Republicans, the Democratic-controlled Senate is likely to dismiss the charges swiftly without a trial or conduct a brief trial that ends without a conviction.

Mayorkas Impeachment and Political Backlash

Alejandro Mayorkas, who assumed office at the beginning of the Biden administration, has become the first Cabinet secretary to face impeachment in nearly 150 years. House Republicans voted to impeach Mayorkas in February, primarily focusing on his approach to the southern border, albeit by a narrow margin after an initial failed attempt.

The Republicans’ targeting of Mayorkas began as soon as they gained control of the House, attributing the high number of border crossings to the Homeland Security secretary. This move was driven by the party’s base, urging accountability from the Biden administration on a crucial campaign issue.

Legal Perspectives and Senate Proceedings
