Ingle included in Wales squad for Euro 2025 after injury recovery

Sophie Ingle has been included in the 23-member Wales squad for Euro 2025 in Switzerland after recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament rupture sustained last September.

The 33-year-old midfielder, who will leave Chelsea this summer, was sidelined for the entire domestic season due to the knee injury. Her return to fitness is a notable boost to Wales’ hopes in their first major tournament.

Rhian Wilkinson‘s squad, ranked 30th in FIFA’s rankings, is in a tough group with the Netherlands, France, and England. However, their chances of causing an upset are increased by the presence of Jess Fishlock, the team’s record scorer and cap-holder, alongside Ingle in midfield.

Fishlock, 38, is still playing in the United States for Seattle Reign. She and Ingle will be joined by Reign teammate Angharad James, the Wales captain, in midfield. The trio has 432 international caps.

Wilkinson, who is half-Welsh, is a tactical coach. She managed Portland Thorns to the NWSL title in the US in 2022 and was an assistant coach with Canada and England’s women’s teams.

Since Wilkinson’s arrival in February 2024, Wales has only lost by more than a goal once, but scoring remains a challenge. The return to full fitness of Crystal Palace striker Elise Hughes after her second ACL rupture is expected to help.

Wilkinson announced her Switzerland-bound party from the summit of Yr Wyddfa, also known as Snowdon, on Thursday morning, accompanied by Leicester goalkeeper Olivia Clark and unattached former Real Betis defender Rhiannon Roberts.

The players will fly to Portugal for a week of training on the Algarve before arriving at their base in Lipperswil in north-east Switzerland, between Zurich and St Gallen, near Lake Constance.

More than 2,000 Wales fans are expected to attend the team’s matches in Lucerne against the Netherlands and St Gallen against France and england.
