The legal battle between two of the biggest giants in the gaming industry has come to an end with a quick and definitive resolution. Sony Interactive Entertainment and Tencent have reached a formal agreement regarding the accusations of plagiarism made against the Chinese giant for Light of Motiram. The court definitively closed the case following a confidential agreement between the parties, thus closing a dispute opened last July, when the Japanese company had denounced similarities that were too strong, bordering on a carbon copy, with its famous Horizon saga.
At the center of the dispute were audiovisual elements and design choices that, according to Sony’s lawyers, clearly violated the intellectual property rights of the series developed by Guerrilla Games. The accusation was not limited to the settings or mechanics alone, but pointed the finger at a marketing strategy that would have exploited a protagonist character that was excessively similar to Aloy, the iconic machine hunter from Horizon Zero Dawn and Forbidden West. Sony had requested an immediate injunction to block what it defined as a deliberate and confusing adoption of other people’s trademarks and stylistic features.
The most tangible and immediate effect of this agreement is the total disappearance of Light of Motiram from the global market. Although the game’s official website still has links to the distribution platforms, the title has been removed from both Steam and the Epic Games Store, making it effectively inaccessible for purchase or download. The speed with which the software was removed suggests that removal was an essential, if not the main, condition for resolving the dispute and abandoning compensation claims.
Despite the initial tension and the seriousness of the accusations, the official post-agreement statements maintain the classic diplomatic and corporate tone. Sean Durkin, head of communications for Tencent Americas, confirmed the amicable closure of the matter, noting that both companies are satisfied with the confidential resolution and look forward to future collaboration. No further public comments will be made, thus sealing the matter within the walls of the legal offices and archiving the short life cycle of the controversial project.
