It was surprisingly revealed that support for Firewall Ultra was ending in September through an update to an old post on the company’s blog dating back three years. Firewall Ultra was released in August 2023, six months after the launch of the PlayStation VR2 virtual reality headset for the PS5.
It has now been announced that the game will be discontinued, but this was done by updating an old post rather than publishing a new announcement. Instead of publishing a new article on the PlayStation Blog announcing the game’s discontinuation, a post dated August 22, 2023 that originally announced its release has been updated.
The new update to the old article stated:
“Firewall Ultra’s online features will be discontinued and will no longer be available starting September 17, 2026.”
He added:
“Since this game requires a permanent internet connection to play, it will not be playable as of September 17, 2026 at 10:00 AM.”
Firewall Ultra was one of only two games exclusive to Sony Interactive Entertainment for the PlayStation VR2, along with the launch game Horizon Call of the Mountain.

Although the game was published by Sony, it was developed by First Contact Entertainment, which had previously released the previous game, Firewall: Zero Hour, on the original PlayStation VR (Sony was also the publisher).
First Contact Entertainment closed its doors in January 2024, just five years after the release of Firewall Ultra, and said at the time: “The lack of support for VR within the industry eventually affected us. As a AAA VR game developer, we were no longer able to justify the expenses required to continue.”
Sony also published a virtual reality update for Gran Turismo 7, and a free educational game called Climate Station that can be played with or without the headset, but otherwise the PlayStation VR2 library consists almost entirely of third-party games and updates.
