P the first solid-state battery for mass production is ready. This is according to the company Donut Lab, which says it has completed work on its project, reports InsideEVs.
The battery offers a capacity of 400Wh per kilogram and can be fully charged in 5 minutes. It also offers 100,000 recharge cycles and is maintenance-free such as charging up to 80% to extend life. If we assume that a car with such a battery will be driven a lot and charged every day, that’s almost 274 years, i.e. much longer than the life of any car.
In comparison, current lithium batteries offer a density of around 250-300Wh/kg and have around 5000 recharge cycles. In addition, additional care is needed such as charging up to 80% for example.
And another bonus for the solid-state battery. She is not bothered by extreme differences in temperatures. Donut claims that even in cold -30 degrees Celsius and hot up to 100 degrees, its battery retains more than 99% of its capacity.
The company says the battery is “100% green, made from materials found everywhere,” making it immune to myth and geopolitical drama, but is keeping its exact composition under wraps for now. But he assures that it is very safe, as there is no way to catch fire in an accident.
The Verge TS Pro electric bike is the first to offer the solid-state battery. It will offer a range of 350 km, and the version with a larger battery will reach 595 km. It takes less than 10 minutes to charge, which the Verge claims was purposely under-charged to give riders time to rest and grab a coffee.
Donut Lab also says that the battery is completely ready for cars as well. The company does not share whether there is interest from manufacturers. Instead, it indicates that it is beginning a process of scaling up production in large volumes.
