The Swiss Greens have submitted 134,000 signatures for their solar initiative to the Federal Chancellery in Bern. The initiative aims to equip all suitable roofs and facades in Switzerland with solar panels.
At the handover, party president Lisa Mazzone said the initiative was the solution to protect the climate and nature at the same time. “It gives the energy transition a boost without relying on overpriced and dangerous nuclear power plants,” said the President of the Green Party.
By expanding solar energy, Switzerland can assume responsibility at home and does not have to “buy its way out” with climate compensation abroad, the Greens said in a press release.

In order for the initiative text to be voted on, there must be 100,000 valid signatures. The Federal Chancellery will check the validity of the submitted signatures. It would be the first popular initiative in ten years for which the Greens collected the signatures alone.
The initiative is officially called “For a secure supply of renewable energy (solar initiative)”. According to the initiative text, exceptions should apply to the obligation to install solar panels on roofs and facades if protection interests prevail or installation would be disproportionate for other reasons.
