Sofia Public Transport Strike: Impasse Continues, subway Services Enhanced

Capital Gripped by Transport disruption

Sofia faces a third day of significant disruption as the public transport strike continues. Negotiations between striking workers and Mayor Vasil Terziev have so far failed to yield a resolution, leaving the city’s bus, tram, and trolleybus services paralyzed. Commuters are bracing for further difficulties navigating the capital.

Subway System Bolstered to Mitigate Impact

In response to the ongoing strike, Metropolitan, Sofia’s subway operator, has announced enhanced services to alleviate the strain on the city’s transportation network. Additional trains will be deployed on lines 1, 2, and 4 on Friday, with line 3 also receiving extra resources. The existing reduced headways on all lines will remain in effect, aiming to maximize passenger capacity and minimize wait times. This measure seeks to provide a reliable alternative for those affected by the surface transport shutdown.

Sticking Points: Wage Demands Remain Unmet

The core of the dispute centers on wage demands from the approximately 7,000 public transport workers. The workers are asking for a BGN 300 pay increase, but Mayor Terziev’s offer of BGN 180 has been rejected. the workers gathered at the Banishora depot, using a tram as a backdrop to visually represent their dissatisfaction with the proposed increase. The gap between the offer and the demand remains a significant obstacle to resolving the strike.

Their request was for BGN 300 and they categorically refuse to accept the mayor’s proposal.

Uncertainty Looms: Mayor’s Ultimatum

The situation remains fluid, with Mayor Terziev issuing a conditional offer to the striking workers. He has stated that if they return to work on Friday and over the weekend,he will meet with them again on Monday morning. Though, the consequences of continuing the strike beyond this point remain unclear, adding to the uncertainty surrounding the duration of the transport blockade.

…if he returned to work tomorrow and on weekends, he would meet with them again at 8 o’clock on Monday. If they continue with the blockade, it is not clear what will happen.

Proposed Solutions Rejected: Free Zones and Bus Lane Access Denied

In an attempt to ease the burden on commuters, suggestions were made to allow free parking in the blue and green zones and to open currently vacant bus lanes to private vehicles. However, these proposals were not accepted, leaving commuters with limited alternative options. The rejection of these measures has drawn criticism from some quarters, with calls for more creative solutions to mitigate the impact of the strike.

Broader Context: Public Transport Challenges in Sofia

This strike highlights the ongoing challenges facing Sofia’s public transport system. According to a recent report by the Sofia Municipality, ridership has declined by 15% in the last year, partly due to increased car ownership and the rise of ride-sharing services. Addressing the concerns of public transport workers and modernizing the system are crucial for ensuring its long-term viability and serving the needs of the city’s residents. Similar strikes have occurred in other european capitals, such as the 2024 Paris Metro strike, underscoring the importance of proactive labor relations in maintaining essential public services.
