China in particular is way ahead when it comes to lithium batteries. There are individual producers and raw material deposits in Europe, but the processing of the raw materials – i.e. the refinery – takes place almost exclusively in China.
This is exactly what makes Europe dependent. That’s why alternatives are needed, for example the sodium-ion battery.
