Snuff Use Among Swedish Youth on the Rise, Sparking Debate

The increasing popularity of “white snuff” among young people in sweden raises concerns and prompts discussions about potential regulations.

since it’s introduction in 2016, the use of so-called “white snuff” has substantially increased among young people in Sweden. This type of snuff contains no tobacco but can have high levels of nicotine, making it highly addictive.

“How adults behave plays a role in how children and young people experience the risks wiht a product,” says the Public Health Authority‘s investigator Grethe Fochsen.

“More power in the classrooms – not a snuff ban”

A state investigation last year suggested that students, even those over 18, should be prohibited from using nicotine products like white snus during school hours. the Public Health Authority supported this, suggesting teachers should also be banned from using snuff during school hours to de-normalize the practice and that the issue should be investigated.

though, Simona Mohamsson opposes the proposal.

“sweden’s most important professional group should gain more power in the classroom – not be met by a moral snuff ban,” she says in a written comment on TT.

29 percent of high school students sniff

According to the national school survey from the Central Association for Alcohol and Drug Details (CAN) last year, 16 percent of ninth graders reported using snuff, compared to 5 percent in 2017. Among high school students, that number jumps to 29 percent. The increase is especially noticeable among girls, with the proportion of snus users increasing from 4 to 26 percent in high school over a ten-year period.

Helen Stjerna,Secretary General of A Non Smoking Generation,an organization working to reduce nicotine and tobacco use among young people, has expressed frustration with the tobacco industry’s developments.

“It is said that it is smoking cessation for adults. Actually, it is indeed the most studied introduction for children and young people. It has been possible to recruit a whole new generation of nicotinists.”

The Public Health Authority warns that nicotine products like white snuff and e-cigarettes pose both direct and indirect health risks.

“Those who use the products are at increased risk of starting smoking cigarettes,” says Grethe Fochsen.

The Government has not yet announced its decision regarding the investigation’s proposal for a snuff ban for students.
