Frisian Resistance Museum Esmée van Eeghen

The Frisian Resistance Museum in Leeuwarden pays reparation to resistance fighter Esmée van Eeghen. Her role in the Second World War was long controversial, because she had a relationship with an officer of the German Wehrmacht. The museum now knows that she was on the right side. Her name is added to a monument with the names of fallen resistance fighters.
Van Eeghen was shot by the Germans in September 1944 at the age of 26. The film Black book by director Paul Verhoeven from 2006 is loosely based on her story.
The monument in the museum now contains the names of 291 people who died in the Frisian resistance, 290 men and one woman. Esmée van Eeghen now joins them, together with another woman, Wieke Bosch.
Her acts of resistance were not under discussion, but according to the curator of the Resistance Museum, she was probably overlooked. Bosch set up an illegal magazine in Leeuwarden and was active in helping people in hiding. She was shot in Ravensbrück concentration camp in February 1945.
