There are twenty cities in the east of Slovakia that are not the seat of a district. Half of them are in the Prešov region, half in Košice. The largest number of over ten thousand inhabitants live in Moldava nad Bodvou, almost twice as many as in the district town of Medzilaborce.
The smallest town is Spišská Stará Ves in the district of Kežmarok, which has a little more than two thousand people. That is at the level of many villages. Not the biggest by far.
The village of Jarovnice in the Sabinov district, which is striving for city status, with its more than eight thousand inhabitants, would be the fourth largest non-district city in eastern Slovakia, while it would gradually attack the higher ranks.

For several years, the Košice police dealt with the case of death in a medical facility. It concerned the patient Nataša B. from Mala Ida in the Košice district, who died at the age of 58 in August 2019 in the hospital in Šačia. The Office for Health Care Supervision also discovered the doubt.
In the summer of 2023, the police brought charges against three female doctors from two hospitals in Košice. They were Ivana J. from the internal department and ZR from the clinic of pneumology and phthisiology of the L. Pasteur University Hospital and JD from the internal department of the hospital in Šac. All three were charged with manslaughter.
After several procedural actions, only Ivana J. from the university hospital remained accused and then indicted. The Košice City Court recently handed down the first verdict.

Another of the series of protest rallies, traditionally organized there by the civic platform Poprad for Democracy, took place in Poprad on Thursday.
This time around 300 participants met in front of the City Hall in Poprad, due to the holding of large Christmas markets in the square, an alternative location was agreed with the city.
It was an annual meeting, almost on the exact day people dissatisfied with the actions of the government of Robert Fico (Smer) have been meeting in Poprad for two years. The first gathering was held there on December 12, 2023. Thursday was the 66th such event in a row.

On Wednesday, a locomotive of the Lokorail freight transport company caught fire at the Veľký Horeš railway station in the Trebišov district. The fire broke out in the engine room of the locomotive shortly before half past eight in the morning.
“It was a fire of a diesel-electric locomotive, which was located separately on track number two at Veľký Horeš station,” Jozef Bálint, spokesman for the Regional Directorate of the Fire and Rescue Service in Košice, told Jane Otriová for Korzár.

Eight men and one woman were charged with various crimes and misdemeanors after a nationwide police action at the turn of June and July called Funeral. Among the two defendants with the largest number of paragraphs is Košice entrepreneur in the field of funeral services Róbert Juraj Paulinský.
The accused are being prosecuted for committing crimes related to a criminal group, general threat, extortion, damage to another’s property, violation of home freedom and indirect corruption.
Although the prosecutor wanted to have seven of them behind bars, the Specialized Criminal Court and the Supreme Court of the Slovak Republic finally sent only four into custody. In addition to Paulinski, Ladislav H., Vladimír Š. and Ondrej K.

The traffic street under the Hlinková bridge in Košice will be open on Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. will be completely closed. The reason is the completion of work on stabilization measures on this bridge, the city informed.
This is a temporary solution with the aim of preventing the technical condition of the bridge structure from deteriorating before the planned reconstruction of the bridge begins next year.
