For the first time in half a century, Sweden is set to build new nuclear power plants. State-owned energy company Vattenfall intends to construct several small modular reactors (SMRs) at Ringhals in Halland.These SMRs are projected to generate approximately the same amount of electricity as 1.5 large nuclear power plants.

According to Vattenfall manager Anna Borg, “we think small nuclear power plants are better than big in that place.” The Swedish government has expressed its support for Vattenfall’s plans, aiming to considerably increase nuclear power capacity in Sweden.

Government Support and Financial Backing

This spring, the Parliament approved support for companies involved in nuclear power construction, allocating hundreds of billions in loans and other financial incentives. The government and the leader of the Swedish Democrats recently met with journalists at Ringhals to discuss the project.
