Sleman Police Chief on Hogi Minaya Case Dilemma

by Archynetys News Desk

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.comSleman Police Chief Commissioner Edy Setyanto Erning Wibowo admitted that he faced a dilemma when handling the Hogi Minaya case, who was identified as a suspect after chasing the person who snatched his wife.

It is known that Hogi became a suspect because the two snatchers he was chasing died.

“That is the dilemma we feel, sir, to decide something when we stand two feet between the victim and the perpetrator,” said Edy at the DPR Commission III meeting, Jakarta, Wednesday (28/1/2026).

Therefore, he explained that the Sleman Police were trying to find evidence and a case in the case which resulted in two people dying.

Because, he said, the police’s job is not like a judge who can decide punishment in the name of justice.

However, the police have the task of searching for and collecting evidence to shed light on a criminal act.

“That’s why we then decided that it is true what authority is mandated to us by law, namely that as police we are only looking for and collecting evidence and making clear criminal acts. We are not deciding things in the name of justice which is the judge’s authority,” he said.

Edy also believes that Hogi’s actions in chasing the two mugging perpetrators were a form of spontaneity or forced defense.

However, he again emphasized that the police’s job is to collect evidence, not make decisions based on belief alone.

“However, we are well aware that the limit of our authority as police is only to collect evidence, not like the authority of a judge who can decide based on belief,” he said.

Furthermore, he emphasized that his party was also trying to shed light on the Hogi case through existing evidence.

In fact, based on the available evidence, the police also accepted a request that Hogi not be detained because the case involved forced defense.

“For this reason, when we received the request not to carry out detention and to borrow evidence from the applicant by Brother Hogi, we considered that while it was within the limits of our authority, we accepted the request and we did not carry out any detention at all with the consideration that the person concerned could continue with his daily activities, gather with his family, and prepare an argument for a forced defense,” he explained.

For information, Hogi Minaya (43) was named a suspect in a traffic accident by the Sleman Police after chasing two snatchers who stole belongings from his wife, Arista Minaya (39).

In that incident, two mugging perpetrators died. Head of Traffic Unit for Sleman Police, AKP Mulyanto, said that the determination of suspect status was carried out after the police carried out a series of investigation processes.
