Chronic insomnia Linked to Increased Dementia Risk: Study

Many people experience sleepless nights, leading to fatigue and difficulty concentrating. However, ongoing sleep problems can pose important risks to brain health.Recent research indicates a strong link between chronic insomnia and an increased risk of cognitive decline and dementia.

A study conducted in the USA has revealed that persistent insomnia can substantially elevate the risk of cognitive impairment and even dementia. A research team led by neurologist Diego Carvalho from Mayo Clinic followed 2,750 older adults for a period of five years. At the study’s outset, all participants were in good health, but 16 percent reported experiencing chronic insomnia.

The findings, published in the journal “Neurology”, indicated that 14 percent of participants with sleep problems developed mild cognitive impairment or dementia, compared to only ten percent of those who slept well. This translates to a statistically significant 40 percent increase in the risk of cognitive decline. In terms of brain age, this corresponds to an acceleration of approximately 3.5 years. Individuals carrying the ApoE 4 gene, a known risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease, were especially vulnerable.

Addressing Sleep Problems: What You Can Do

The good news is that sleep problems are treatable. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is considered the most effective treatment for insomnia. Establishing consistent sleep routines, practicing relaxation techniques, avoiding caffeine in the evening, and managing screen time before bed can also be beneficial.

Neurologist Carvalho emphasizes that “Sleep is not just about peace – it’s also about the resistance of the brain.” taking sleep problems seriously and seeking treatment can protect not only your current quality of life but also your long-term mental performance.
