Hardly any other food is currently more hyped than Skyr. That’s why the dairy product is sold out or at least heavily out of stock in many German stores such as Kaufland and Lidl.
Empty refrigerated shelves in many German supermarkets and discounters. Because consumers are currently looking in vain for Skyr in many grocery stores in Germany. The dairy product is even completely sold out in some places. The reason for this is, among other things, hype on social media. This is shown by a survey by German press agency (dpa) among large retail chains.
Skyr bottleneck at Kaufland and Lidl – this is the Internet hype behind it
“There are currently selective fluctuations in availability in some regions,” explains one Rewe-Speaker. This could lead to bottlenecks. The retailer has registered a significant increase in demand for Skyr since the beginning of February. Current trends in social media further reinforce this development. The suppliers therefore produce at high capacity. The spokesman does not expect any relaxation until after Easter. We know how healthy the milk product Skyr is when consumed daily SOUTHWEST24.
The Picnic delivery service is also affected: “Skyr sales volumes have doubled compared to the end of last year,” says Frederic Knaudt, co-founder of the German Picnic branch. The cause is viral recipe trends on Tiktok and Instagram. “At the beginning of the year, the Skyr lotus cheesecake caused a lot of hype, currently it is the combination of Skyr and energy drinks as a protein mix.” According to Knaudt, the situation has already eased slightly. However, the bottlenecks have not yet completely disappeared.
Kaufland, Edeka, Lidl and Aldi Nord are also reporting significantly increased interest from customers. Other media had previously reported on it. Speaking of Lidl: Just a few days ago, the discount giant recalled a vegan yogurt alternative due to a health risk echo24 reported.
Skyr is similar to yogurt, but significantly higher in protein
Skyr is considered a traditional dairy product from Iceland. It is reminiscent of yogurt, but is classified as cream cheese. To produce it, special cultures are added to skimmed milk and then drained – similar to quark. Skyr has a firm consistency and tastes mildly sour.
The product contains hardly any fat, but more than 10 grams of protein per 100 grams. This means it provides significantly more protein than yoghurt. Strength athletes in particular like to use Skyr because protein is said to help build and maintain muscles. There are also versions with fruit, muesli or chocolate available in stores.
Skyr sold out at Kaufland and Co.? This makes low-fat quark an alternative
If Skyr is not available in the store, consumers can loudly Federal Center for Nutrition (BZfE) Switch to low-fat quark. This can be mixed with milk or sparkling water until creamy and used as an alternative.
A protein-rich diet is currently trendy in Germany. The consumption of poultry meat and eggs has also increased significantly recently. There are also sometimes shortages of eggs.
According to the BZfE, the human body needs proteins as a building material for the immune system, for the transport of other nutrients and as a source of energy. The German Nutrition Society recommends adults up to 65 years of age consume 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight every day. Competitive and ambitious recreational athletes may need up to 2 grams. According to experts, special high-protein products are usually not necessary because a balanced diet provides enough protein.
