Lola Young, a 24-year-old British singer, enjoyed dazzling success with her song “Messy”. A song that has become a true anthem for all those claiming their imperfection which quickly went viral on TikTok. Very open about her health problems, she recently announced that she was taking a break, after feeling unwell on stage during a concert.

Lola Young target of fatphobia

With over 40 million monthly listeners on Spotify, three albums to her name and nominations from the Brit Awards and BBC Sound, she has confirmed that she is not just a passing phenomenon. Lola Young seduced the public with her frankness and authenticity, addressing her mental health and addictions, her schizoaffective disorder and even her sexuality and desire.

September 30, the English festival The Great Escape published a video of the young popstar in 2019, in which she performs one of her compositions and plays the guitar. We see a Lola Young only 18 years old, with a more demure style and a refined silhouette. It was enough for fatphobes to come and comment on his physique. “She was better before”, “She looked healthier”, “Much more beautiful”, “What happened to her?”can we read loosely under the Instagram post.

Schizoaffective disorder and addiction

While the young woman announced on her Instagram account that she was canceling her concerts and that she was going to be absent for a while, after having felt unwell in the middle of a concert, her fans recall in comments that she has been through very complicated things and that these comments are filthy. Indeed, before her dazzling success, Lola Young spent a stay in rehab for cocaine addiction, at the time when her hit Messy exploded in 2024. She also suffers from schizoaffective disorder (mental disorder combining symptoms of bipolar disorder and symptoms of schizophrenia), which can cause manic episodes and require hospitalization.

“I’m going to be away for a while. It pains me to have to cancel all my plans for the near future”she wrote on Instagram on September 30. “I sincerely hope that you will give me a second chance when I have taken the time to work on myself and come back stronger.”
