Girl with Life-Threatening Condition Granted One-Year Reprieve from US Deportation
A young girl battling a severe illness has been granted a temporary reprieve from deportation, allowing her to continue receiving critical medical treatment in the United States.
Four-year-old Sofia, who is undergoing treatment at the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, has been granted a one-year extension to remain in the U.S. after concerns were raised that her life could be in danger if her treatment was disrupted.
Sofia relies on a specialized backpack that delivers essential nutrients directly into her system, as she is unable to absorb them naturally. This advanced treatment is exclusively available in the U.S.
Sofia suffers from short bowel syndrome, a severe and potentially fatal condition, since birth. She and her mother, Deysi, initially entered the U.S. legally in July 2023 and were granted humanitarian parole for two years to facilitate her medical care.
In April, just three months into the presidency of DONALD TRUMP, the family received a notice stating that their humanitarian parole was being revoked, and they were required to return to MEXICO promptly.
The family’s legal representatives stated that medical professionals cautioned that interrupting her treatment could lead to her death “within days.”
“We’re sending them to die,” lawyer Gina Amato lough told Sky News last week.
According to MS.LOUGH, “That’s not justice and it doesn’t make us any safer. We cannot let our country turn its back on this child.”
After appealing to officials and pleading their case, the family’s efforts appear to have been accomplished.DEYSI has now received notification that her humanitarian parole has been extended for another year.
