Advocacy Groups Urge Biden Administration To Share Delayed…
Before Tuesday’s reporting that the Biden administration will delay a highly anticipated report on whether Israel is using U.S. military aid in compliance with international law, a coalition of advocacy groups circulated a letter urging the White House to share the document with the public once it’s published.
In February, President Joe Biden issued National Security Memorandum (NSM)-20, which requires Secretary of State Antony Blinken “to obtain certain credible and reliable written assurances from foreign governments” receiving U.S. arms “that the recipient country will use any such defense articles in accordance with international humanitarian law” and then provide Congress with periodic reports “to enable meaningful oversight.”
The first report is due by Wednesday. However, four congressional aides told Politico Tuesday that publication would be postponed indefinitely.
“It is not clear if your administration intends to… make this report available to the public,” coalition members Amnesty International USA, Defending Rights & Dissent, Freedom of the Press Foundation, National Press Photographers Association, Radio Television Digital News Association, and Reporters Without Borders said in a letter to Biden drafted ahead of Politico’s reporting.
“We strongly urge you to make the report available to the public and the press to the greatest extent possible,” the groups added.

The upazila administration has safely evacuated the residents from the collapsed six-storied building named ‘Biswas Manjil’ in Hirajheel residential area of Siddhirganj, Narayanganj.
Narayanganj Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Dedarul Islam arranged for their evacuation on Tuesday (May 7) evening. A team of fire service and Siddhirganj police station was present at the time.
Earlier on Monday (May 6) afternoon, Jago News published news under the title ‘Siddhirganj 6-storey building has collapsed’. When the matter came to the attention of the administration, arrangements were made to evacuate the residents.
Fakhruddin Ahmed, Deputy Assistant Director of Narayanganj Fire Service and Civil Defense said, one of the two buildings has collapsed on top of the other. Due to high risk, electricity and gas connection of the collapsed building has been disconnected. 16 families in the building have been evacuated to safety. Warning banners have been put up on the building.
A number of tenants were relocated from the vulnerable building, but a few other families were still living.
Locals say that piling was not done during the construction of the building. Because of this, it is leaning to one side. The owner of the same building has constructed another building next to it.

Jakarta – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan inaugurated the opening of a mosque that was a former ancient church in Istanbul. This adds to the list of Byzantine era buildings that have been converted into places of worship for Muslims.
This inauguration was carried out on Monday (6/5/2024), four years after the Erdogan government designated the church as a house of worship for Muslims, reported AP News.
Türkiye officially converted St. Savior in Chora, also known as Kariye in Turkish, became a mosque in 2020. This was done after converting the iconic Byzantine church in Istanbul, Hagia Sophia, into a mosque.
Greece criticizes Türkiye’s decision
The conversion of this place of worship has drawn criticism from Greece. He urged Türkiye to protect this important Byzantine era building. It is known that Hagia Sophia and Kariye are listed as World Heritage Sites at the UN.
